David Peter Uttley Obituary

Head of External Supplies GB & Ireland who explored many countries via a cruise ship and car and made his family home in Monmouth, South Wales.

David (Dave) Uttley died aged 52, started his career and remained with Beechams, SmithKline Beechams, Glaxco SmithKline, GSK and more recently Suntory for 25 years rising through the ranks to become Head of External Supplies GB & Ireland.

He loved his roles over the years, even when Covid hit and the world, seemingly, came to a halt!

David joined the company, initially, as a contractor.  In less than a year he was offered the job of Electrical Engineer and working with many a team progressed, successfully, dragging and pushing colleagues with him.  His no nonsense approach left you knowing a spade was a spade and a shovel a shovel.  Disagreements were left in the room and banter, particularly about his beloved Sheffield Wednesday, and beers followed.  He was pivotal in the installation and commissioning of Blends which is still the heart of the Coleford plant, to this day.  Not known for his adherence to sticking to processes and procedures his team often joked about his ‘back of the fag packet’ calculations which, to their annoyance, were never far off correct!!

David thrived in his volunteering within Monmouth Town Football Club where he spent many an hour, over a pint, with many others battling through the paperwork developing the club to where it is today. He along with a vast quantity of volunteers successfully pulled off the biggest Junior football tournament Wales had seen drawing in over 200 teams to play over one weekend.  Over 1,800 trophies were distributed that weekend and the joy of the weekend was retiring to bed on the Sunday evening saying – ‘We begin next year's event tomorrow!’ Just when he thought nothing would or could top that off plans that had been in motion for ten years came to fruition last season with the confirmation and erection of the Towns Football Stand.  Time, energy and David's tenacity achieved the impossible dream for many.

David's cheeky chappy, mischievous manner stemmed from childhood and helped him throughout work and life keep a positive, motivational attitude.  Leading from the back he’d push and cajole you forwards propelling you into roles you didn’t see yourself in, taking chances no one else saw allowing you to grow.  He led from the front when he needed to and didn’t suffer fools in any guise.

He was a kind soul with a heart of gold, often worn on his sleeve and was proud as any other parent will ever be, of his wife and three children Charlotte, Sam and Callum. They do say behind every great man, there’s a good woman and David certainly landed on his feet with Louise.  His children were brought up by their ears, pushed onwards and upwards, hands held to drag them along (often kicking and screaming), tears wiped and hugged fiercely, they were his pride and joy.  His family, extended family and friends meant the world to him.

Described by many as a ‘proper gent’ David will be remembered for his generosity, his tenacity to see a job through to the bitter end and for reminding everyone that family and friends come first!
